Title: The Patient’s Perspective: The 2 me’s of meaningful engagement

Virna has lived with type-1 diabetes for 33 years. She endured chronic kidney disease, including dialysis and a successful kidney-pancreas transplant, during the last 11 years. Virna is committed to educate and inspire people to leverage every available resource to create a healthier and more meaningful life. She draws from her personal experiences to provide educational/motivational presentations to patients, patient caretakers and healthcare professionals. She includes useful ideas and strategies for improving communications, understanding and patient health.

Virna has been a public speaker since 1997, has lobbied on Capitol Hill, participated in coalitions and alliance groups such as Kidney Care Partners. She is the Project Management Office Director and Deputy Program Director for a company that provides contracted services to the Federal government. She is the Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition’s Patient Advisory Committee Chair, a member of their Medical Review Board and a Beneficiary Advisory Committee Member for the Forum of End Stage Renal Disease Networks.

Participants of this program will:

• Gain a better understanding of the patient’s perspective on meaningful engagement
• Learn methods for bridging communication gaps with patients
• Be able to leverage patient preference to make office visits more productive
• Identify ways to build better relationships with patients

Dr. Morrisey is a pediatrician and serves as the Chair of the Minnesota Shared Decision Making Collaborative. He has been working to improve the patient experience of care through clinical implementation projects, research, and community engagements projects since 2003. His passion is to make care more patient-centered and of the highest quality possible, and to work with teams to find the best solutions for each person so that they can understand their choices and the best available medical evidence to ensure that their preferences and values are respected.

Overview: In this session, attendees will learn the key components and principles of shared decision making (SDM) and strategies to implement SDM in practice. They will increase their knowledge in the areas of patient-centered care, preference sensitive decisions, risk/benefit vs. patients’ perceived risk/benefit, and decision aids. Attendees will learn that the provider and patient are each experts and need each other to be successful.

Objectives:

• —  Understand the key components and principles of SDM
• —  Learn about the patient and provider experience with SDM
• —  Consider strategies to implement SDM in practice
